DIY Dream Pillows

As we enter into the last moments of winter and the light begins to return, balancing the increasing brightness and business of our daytime with continued quiet and deep rest in the evenings becomes important to maintain our sanity.

Dream pillows on a windowsill

Tending to our sleep hygiene and dream life can be a beautiful way to do this. One of my solstice activities this year was sewing these lovely dream pillows. They were so easy to make and it has been such a soothing delight to smell the mugwort, lavender, and chamomile as I drift off to sleep or if I wake in the night.

Here’s my “recipe” for DIY dream pillows:

You’ll need

  • 6"x8" piece of cotton fabric

  • Needle and thread or sewing machine

  • Iron

  • Aromatic and calming herbs of your choosing. Some options are mugwort, chamomile, lavender, rose, lemon balm. If you’re making these for a little one, or you’re prone to nightmares, replace the mugwort with protective yarrow.

  1. Iron your piece of fabric in half, lengthwise, wrong sides together.

  2. Sew along the edges of your pouch, leaving a 2 inch, unsewn, gap to inside-out the fabric and for filling.

  3. Inside out your pillow and fill it up with the herbs of your choosing!

  4. Fold the raw edges of the unsewn gap inwards and iron down to create a clean line across the side. Sew shut.

And, there you have it! Stash underneath your pillow or at your bedside table for sweet dreams and protection. I like to give it a big sniff, followed by a nice audible exhale, right before bed.
