Too often I enter a client’s home and am greeted by a mother who has not eaten in far too long. And, I get it. The first few weeks of postpartum are filled with so much newness: from learning to nurse to navigating blowouts to figuring out how to even pee and poop with a little more ease, remembering to eat can often be the last thing on a new parent’s mind. However, adequate postpartum nutrition is essential to speed up full physical recovery, promote milk production, and support changing hormones and over-all wellbeing, like energy and mood.
On top of the requirement to simply get some calories, new moms have some specific nutrient requirements that aren’t often addressed in mainstream pregnancy/postpartum education. A few examples of the specific nutritional requirements of a postpartum mother:
Protein is essential to promoting muscle function, fiber helps sweep excess hormones out of the body, and extra calcium promotes breastfeeding and balances out the postpartum decrease in estrogen that can affect bone health.
Iron, vitamin B12 and folate boost blood cells and help replenish the body’s blood supply.
Nursing mothers need vitamin D, iodine, selenium, choline, and thiamin to make sure that they have enough to support their baby’s and their own mineral needs.
As a postpartum chef offering postpartum meal delivery in San Francisco, I prioritize crafting organic, whole-food meals that are designed to deliver the essential macro and micro nutrients that newly postpartum mothers need for optimal health.
The Portal Postpartum Meal Delivery Service includes a weekly delivery of postpartum appropriate foods. Each delivery includes a weeks-worth of a nutrient dense stew, a sweet and high-protein snack, and an herbal tea.
Food is prepared using principles from Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as my own belief that joyful meals are an essential part of ensuring adequate postpartum nutrition. This week, client's received a red lentil curry with warming spices, high-fiber peanut butter protein bites, and digestion-boosting Ayurvedic CCF tea.
Portal Postpartum Meal Delivery is available to new families living in San Francisco, Marin, and the East Bay.
